Heikki Seppälä
Heikki Seppälä is a psychologist and has worked with people with intellectual disabilities for more than 25 years. He has been working in FAIDD (The Finnish Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) since 1994, and today he is the director of the Center for Research and Develompent in FAIDD. His research activities have concentrated on psychosocial well-being and psychological stress of people with IDD and he has developed “Assessment of Psychosocial Capabilities of People with Developmental Disabilities” (Helsinki 1996) together with professor Markku Ojanen. This assessment method is still widely used in Finnish services for people with IDD. - Heikki Seppälä´s present interest lie on coping skills and coping mechanisms of people who have ID and psychological stress. He is an active member of a project team which is working with people with mild cognitive limitations and complex psychosocial needs. The aim of this project is to find new ways of supporting these people by encouraging and helping them to define the focus of their needs for support, themselves. This approach includes close cooperation with their networks of family members and friends.
