Heleen Evenhuis

Heleen Evenhuis has worked as a physician in Dutch intellectual disability (ID) care since 1973. Together with two colleagues, she developed the Dementia Questionnaire for persons with Intellectual Disabilities (DMR). In 1990, she completed a PhD thesis on dementia and hearing loss in persons with Down syndrome. From 1995–1999, she received a government grant to systematically develop scientific activities on behalf of ID medicine. One of her activities was to chair the development of a curriculum for a 3-year specialist education of ID physicians. This was followed by a professorship at the Erasmus University Rotterdam since 2000 and in the same year, formal recognition of the new specialism and the start of the specialist training at the same university. Her research focusses on: 1. visual and hearing impairment, 2. pulmonary and feeding problems in children with severe generalized cerebral palsy, and 3. healthy ageing
